Square Enix's HD-2D titles have been receiving a lot of praise

Square Enix's HD-2D titles have been receiving a lot of praise and recognition from gamers. Titles like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy have really captured the attention of fans of retro games in part due to their unique art style.

In a new interview on 4Gamer (translated from Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano talked about the graphic style, and how it's going to be implemented into future games for the company. In response to the interviewer's concern by the fact that more games from independent developers haven't taken on the same design, Asano revealed the reason is that it's a bit expensive!

"It's probably worth noting that it's priced higher than you'd imagine. It's an ideal fit for the titles want from Square Enix. There's not much to gain from the other companies that are copying it," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately this cost won't stop Square Enix from releasing more games with this type of design.

A remake of Live a Live is set to release exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, as a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently working on. There are a number of other games that could benefit from the style, so it'll be fascinating to discover how Square Enix does with HD-2D next. While the company is clearly invested in this graphic style, Asano went on to clarify that there isn't any yet a "definitive Bible," and it will continue to evolve from gaming to.

"We don't have anything similar to that. The way it's described differs for each movie, meaning that the HD-2D flavor is different each time. With Live A Live for example the setting in the prehistoric scene will differ from the sci-fi scene.
